Viruses, trojans and rootkits are just some of the types of malware in circulation that can infect unprotected computers.

The effects of malware infections can range from the merely annoying advertising popups, to the considerably more serious file or system corruption. In the worst cases infections can leave a computer in a completely unusable state, unable to start or to access any data.

We recommend a multi-layer approach to preventing the compromising of your computer system in the first place.

  1. Ensure that your connection to the internet has at the very least a basic firewall.

  2. Ensure that your computer has an updated and operational firewall. This software on your computer will help to prevent unwanted programs from maling outbound connections to the internet, thus reducing the chance of unwittingly sending out large numbers of spam e-mails if your computer has been compromised.

  3. Install a reliable anti-virus application and, ensure that it is kept up to date at all times. Run a full scan of your computer on a regular basis.

  4. Be aware that legitimate websites can be compromised.

  5. If you receive emails asking for any security or personal details, say bank or other financial details, treat the request with a great deal of suspicion. Reputable companies will not ask for your details in an insecure manner. Such requests are likely to be attempts to fraudulently access bank accounts etc.

  6. Take regular backups of the data on your computer. The best situation is to have a regular backup of your entire computer system to allow it to be restored easily in the event of a complete failure.

  7. If you suspect that your computer has been infected, disconnect it from any network access to prevent the infection spreading to other computers on your network. Seek professional advice as soon as possible.
